第1話「幼馴染みとの再会」
あと1時間ぐらいかな…
ガタゴトと音をたてながら修善寺に向かう電車の中、帰省中のアヤは、腕の時計
を気にする。さきほど三島駅で東海道新幹線から伊豆箱根鉄道に乗り換 え、修
善寺駅に着いた後はさらに路線バスに乗り換え、地元天城あまぎを目指す。仕事
にかまけて帰省するのは3年ぶりだ。
車が運転できれば、三島から伊豆縦貫道で１時間もかからないのに…間に合うか
な？時間を気にするのには理由があった。1週間前、偶然にもアヤの職 場にふ
らっと来た、幼馴染みのケイと待ち合わせしているからだ。ケイとは大学が違っ
たので、会うのは高校卒業以来5年ぶり。なんだか変に緊張す る…12月の寒さで
体が冷えたせいなのか、気持ちが落ち着かないせいなのか、手に力が入る。
ケイとの再会は、伊豆半島の真ん中、月ヶ瀬にある「ことばし」という橋にし
た。その隣に、昔よく一緒に食べた『猪最中』を売る和菓子屋、「小戸橋 製
菓」があるからだ。何でも食べる前に鼻をなでると願い事が叶うらしく、ケイは
それを自身が手がける観光ツアーに取り入れようとしているらしい。 私、モニ
ターに利用されたのかなぁ？ 和菓子は好きだからいいけれどさぁ
「月ヶ瀬温泉」のバス停で降り歩きながら考えていると、あっという間に小戸橋
製菓に着いてしまった。ケイがことばしの上で手を振っている。今日は アヤに
返さないといけない物があるんだよね、なんて言っていたけれど、何のことだろ
う？…
「おぉ、おかえり」
紺色のコートを着たケイは、くしゃっとした笑顔で言う。アヤより頭一つ分背が
高いため、アヤは自然と少し見上げる形になる。高校の時と比べると顔 が
しゅっとしまり、少し大人っぽくなっている。でも、色素の薄い少しクセの混
じった短い髪や、人のよさそうな下がった目じりと人懐こい雰囲気は、 昔のま
まだ。笑うと目の端にしわができるのも相変わらずで、ちょっとかわいい…アヤ
の緊張が少しほぐれていく。
「ほら、アヤの好きな小戸橋製菓の定番、買っておいたよ。昔みたいに並んで食
べよ」23歳にもなって無邪気に、並んで食べよ、とか普通は恥ずかし いのだ
が、ケイが言うと違和感がないのだから不思議だ。アヤは言われるままに、どこ
か温かい感じのする天城の緑に囲まれたことばしで、久々にケイ と並んで猪最
中をほおばる。
「そう、この味！ あんこの甘さが絶妙！」
口いっぱいに広がる美味しさに、アヤは思わず声が出る。
「みずみずしくてコクのあるあんこの甘さと、さっくりもっちりとした皮！ い
つ食べても美味しい」アヤは無類の和菓子好きだ。特に、この小戸橋製菓の和菓
子が小さい頃から大好きだった。味はもちろんだが、手のひらに乗る小さめの
サイズで食べやすいことと、何よりころんとした姿がかわいいのだ。そして何か
あるたびに、ここの和菓子たちには助けられてきた。最近では、仕事で ストレ
スが溜まってくると、ネットで購入しては助けを求める存在だ。
「これが、老舗の味ってことよね」
「適当な感想だなぁ」
ケイが呆れた顔で応える。
適当ではない、小戸橋製菓が100年も続く老舗なのは本当だ、とアヤは心の中で
反論する。
「そういえば、何で猪の形をしているんだっけ？」
「あぁ、このあたりは昔猪が多くて、走る姿を最中にしたんだよ。イタリアの
フィレンツェだと、イノシシ像の鼻を撫でると幸運がもたらされるから、 この
最中も食べる前に鼻をなでると願い事が叶うらしいよ」
「…あたし、もう食べちゃった」
「この前会った時に話しただろ」
「そういえば言ってたっけ？」
「しっかりしていそうに見えて、アヤは意外と抜けているんだよな」
「そんなことないよ」
アヤは、ムッと頬を膨らませる。
「はは、そんな顔してたら、あのツンとすました店員顔が台無しだなぁ」
「ひっどーい」
アヤは久々のやり取りに、懐かしさが込上げてくる。ケイは何かにつけてアヤを
からかい、アヤはテンポよくそれに応える…それは小さい頃から、ふた りの間で
繰り返されてきた。しかも、ケイがからかう素振りを見せるのはアヤにだけだっ
た。お互い気心が知れていて、変に気を遣わなくていいから、 と昔ケイが言っ
ていた。だから、アヤはからかわれても嫌な気がしない。むしろそれは、アヤに
とっても安心できることだ。
アヤは横目でケイを見ながら、5年ぶりに隣にケイがいることと、普通に話せて
いることに、ほっと胸をなでおろす。でも、ケイはいったいどうして、 今日あ
たしを誘ったのかな…？思い当たる事がなく、アヤの頭には疑問がよぎる。そん
なアヤをよそに、隣ではケイが、猪最中をもう1個ほおばってい る。ケイは人懐
こくもあるが、マイペースな性格でもあった。
「そろそろ行こうか。今日は久々に天城をまわりたいんだ」ケイはそう言うと、
小戸橋製菓の駐車場に停めてある車に向かった。

物語にもあったとおり、小戸橋製菓の店内には木彫りのイノシシ像が置いてあ
り、その看板には「鼻を撫でると幸運がもたらされる」と書いてありま す。そ
う書いてあるとやってみたくなるのが人の性。みんなに撫でられたその鼻は、現
在つるつるになっています。
